The Good Dishes
I've been thinking lately about how good we are at postponing enjoyment.
We'll relax when the work is finished.
We'll take the trip when the timing is better.
We'll wear the outfit when there's somewhere important to go.
We'll open the good bottle, use the pretty dishes, buy the flowers, take ourselves to lunch...eventually.
Apparently, life is supposed to begin immediately after we finish everything on our todo list.
Which is hilarious, because when has that ever happened?
There is always another email. Another load of laundry. Another bill. Another project. Another thing that suddenly becomes urgent because somebody somewhere has decided it is.
And lately, I've been wondering:
What if we stopped making joy earn its place on the calendar?
Maybe Friday afternoon is reason enough to put on the good perfume.
Maybe you don't need company to make yourself a beautiful dinner.
Maybe the dress you've been saving deserves to see daylight.
Maybe you can turn the music up while you're cleaning the kitchen and dance terribly-with confidence.
Maybe you can sit outside with your coffee for twenty minutes without turning it into a productivity exercise.
And maybe this weekend doesn't need to be extraordinary at all.
It can simply be yours.
Do something that makes you laugh. Go somewhere you've never been. Call the friend who always gets you into trouble-the reasonable kind.
Sleep late. Wander through a bookstore.
Buy yourself flowers. Eat dessert first.
Or do absolutely nothing and refuse to feel guilty about it.
There will be plenty of time for becoming.
Sometimes, it's nice just to be.
Happy almost-weekend.
